Keeping the Kitchen the Heart of Your Home- Part 1

According to NewsWeek, https://www.newsweek.com/americans-feel-most-home-their-kitchens-survey-reveals-1730629 , Americans spend 400 hours a year in their kitchen.

What would happen if we made more of those hours intentional, rather than rushed, chaotic, or hectic? (Did anyone say ‘back to school’?!)

In this 3-part blog series, we’ll provide a new tip each week to help you intentionally keep the kitchen the heart of your home.

For now, let’s dive in to Part 1- Utilize your Fridge Creatively.

It’s no secret that the fridge is one of the most looked at and touched item in the house by FAR. What if we used that fact to our advantage when thinking about intentionally gathering our family together in the kitchen?

With some creativity and a few magnets (or double sided tape if your fridge isn’t magnetic), here are some items you could hang on your fridge to draw the family together intentionally:

  1. As the adorable picture shows, a magnetic chalkboard strip (or whiteboard) is a great addition to any fridge. You can add it up high to write reminders or notes, or place it lower so that younger children can draw.
  2. Calendars! Between work lunches, PTA meetings, soccer practice, pool parties… the need for scheduling only increases as the year winds down. Having a family calendar in a centralized place (like the fridge) allows for everyone to pick a color and put their dates, times, and places on a calendar for everyone to see.
  3. Chore charts… need we say more? Where better of a place to list out each person’s way to help steward the home well than the fridge that everyone goes to 10,000 times a day anyways?
  4. Grocery lists: how many times have we gone to Publix, only to realize we have no idea what we still have left in the fridge to base meal plans off of? Sticking a magnetic or adhesive notepad on the fridge makes “need to buy” lists super simple- saving you time as the week goes on. Out of sight, out of mind has an opposite that rings true too.
  5. Last but not least, a weekly meal plan! Finding a way to write out what your family will eat each day of the week (at least for dinner) can save the adults from the relentless pestering of “what’s for dinner?”. Not only that, but meal planning helps keep grocery buying on the same page, and allows you to plan ahead for longer prep times for certain meals.
